What is a rube?

A rube is a term used to describe a person from a rural or country background who is considered naive, unsophisticated, or lacking in knowledge or experience of city life. The term is often used to describe someone who is gullible or easily fooled, especially in situations involving con artists or scam artists. The term can also be used to describe someone who is old-fashioned, unsophisticated or out of touch with modern trends and technologies. The word 'rube' is believed to have originated in the United States sometime in the 1890s and was often used in reference to people from rural areas who attended fairs and exhibitions in the cities and were seen as easy targets for fraud.
